Layout, Life Drawing, and Animals OH MY!

I have quite a few things for you today, for I forgot to upload last weeks life drawing!!!
So included in this post are some cool layout drawings/painted renderings, Life Drawing, and some animal sketches from the zoo!

A rough layout of a new york style street scene from my imagination!
The entire painted version of the layout. Gouache on Illustration board!
 Life Drawing

Once again, we did contour relief studies in life drawing, we did a couple of warm up gestures, but not a satisfying amount at all.. something obscure like 7...
My favourite contour relief so far!!
Very quick head studies

Another contour relief pose,
Her head looks slightly big, though she did have a large head... hmm
Extra Life

Gestures -- One, Three and Five minutes long

Trying to use less gesture lines and do a speedy contour
-- Kind of like the shape this one makes!

Something about this one that I really like!

This woman must have been a dancer,
her movements were graceful and twists were seemingly impossible.

And bored during the breaks!
Zoo Animals

Unfortunately due to the cold weather, most of the animals at the Toronto Zoo, were not out and about, there were a few indoor pavilions, so there are a couple of good sketches.

A very sad Rino

A very bored hippo

These may have been the only happy animals.
White Tigers, there were three or four of them playing together
(Hence the gestures)

Huge crowd looking at the gorillas,
as soon as I have a view good enough to sketch,
this lovely fella decided it was time to move
... after like a half hour of staying still... jerk.

And finally the Alligator.
He may look a little lifeless...
but they just lay there... that is it.. with that sly grin..

Anyways!
I hope you enjoyed all of the art! Feel free to comment any time!
I am so exhausted from portfolioing.. its almost done...

soon.

Time to watch some Merlin, then hit the sheets!

Contour relief drawings

We did something new in life drawing today...
Contour relief drawings! It has been a long time since I have done any form of shading the figure, but I think these came out very nicely!

No gestures this class...
This will be an interesting term -- looks like I will be doing more extra life so I can get some lovely gesture time <3

After covering the entire newsprint in willow/vine charcoal, we used kneedable erasers and tissues to pull out some highlights and lighten some of the mid tones. We created more drastic shadows using our conte.

My favourite of the four!

I tried to really create a contrast
with brighter highlights in this drawing!

I love this one as well!

Back to portfolioing (<-- totally a word) away! Hope you enjoyed them!

Eco-logic & Work in progress

Hey guys, I have returned with some more ART!
I am not going to lie, I was a little annoyed with my 2D design teacher.
We were assigned a new project to think about over the break, and told we had 3 weeks to work on it once we returned to school, when in fact we only had one week.
Nice.

Anyways it was to design a logo for a charity, home business or education based group.
I chose my mum's eco team at school.
She has been feeling a little down because of the strikes that are going on, they can't have clubs or sports or anything thanks to the teacher's union -- this is especially hard for my mum. She is the TA in a special needs class at Huron St. Public School, and for a lot of these kids, sports and clubs are all they have when school is a big struggle.
She also helps run the eco team at school, which is not happening due to the strike.
This group of kids are amazing. They come up with ideas themselves and put them into action. Ways to make their school and community more eco-friendly.

I really feel for these kids. If someone took away art from me when I was in school, I don't know how I could have come this far.

Here is my logo in colour and reduced in black and white. Gouache on Illustration board.
A zoom in to the reduced image
Some of the thumbnails I drew for this project...
The recycling bin still makes me laugh.

Lately.. I have been thinking it has been a while since I have truly painted or done art for myself. Other than my sketchbook, there has been a purpose, whether it is for school, portfolio or a simple gift for a friend, they really truly haven't been for the sake of just art. So I painted.

Here is a painting (in progress) I am currently working on...

as you know... I love whales.

Hope you guys like it so far, let me know of course, it is still in progress and will probably change drastically!

Good night!!

I am happy to be back at school.
This may not have been the program of my choosing, and it may not challenge me, but I do get to be in an awesome environment surrounded by art.

We got a new life drawing teacher, he seems nice, I am just a little disappointed for I really did respect my last one (-- he also has all of the work I have done this year so far, and I would love to have it back hahah).

Anyways, our class is a little different, less gesture and more long poses which is alright, just different.
So I included a couple of quick gestures, a five minute pose and two 25 minute poses!
I stayed for some extra life, but just wasn't feeling it -- it was a rough day yesterday.

-- Caught the wisdom in his eyes..
or could that be him dosing off ;)

I also have some sketches of a basic exercise we did in drawing systems ( a more technical class).
We had a step to step drawing of a house in perspective -- this was to teach us to add more complex forms whilst retaining the original perspective of the basic box.

Steps 1 & 2
(box in perspective, then adding the roof)
Steps 3 & 4
(Adding the addition, as well as it's roof)

Steps 5 & 6
(Adding the porch
and extending the roof and indentations)
Steps 7 & 8
(Adding windows, pillars steps etc.)
Step 9
"Imagination"

Technically... we were only supposed to do up to step 6, but I have a knack for perspective so I thought I'd continue until the end of class -- after drawing the house that was given to us, I began adding my own details to the final sketch, sort of a twist on the given drawing --- even though that is technically our next project.... oh well, didn't realize that at the time...

Anyways, I shall be back soon with some more life drawing and some gouache work!!

Night!!

Holiday Cards

My break was exhausting.
I wouldn't call it much of  a break --- working long holiday hours at my part time job every day, and character design every chance I had.

I finally have a character.
It is January.
*faints*

Anyways, one thing I got around to was making some nice holiday cards for everyone at work.
We worked hard. At least 8 hours every day, full of customers right before christmas at HMV.

Toronto Eaton Centre + Christmas = hell.

So I thought I'd brighten the mood!
Holiday cards for everyone at work!!

You may have also noticed the quality of the photos are like a hundred times better...
That is thanks to my wonderful mum, who got me a spiffy new DSLR digital camera for christmas!!
-- or according to my friend Ryland, a "Hipster" camera...
mmkay.

I once again apologize for my inconsistent blogging -- I will get better, I promise... just very stressed out constantly.
I have to complete my portfolio for February 25th.. just under two months away.

That's all I have for you today!
