Textures!

At long last here are my texture studies for Painting class!
I loved this project, it was lots of fun to do, but also a lot of work (and quite a few failed attempts!)

I think they came out pretty okay!

These are done with gouache and took a really long time each.. i'd say about 6 hours each... yeah..
It was a good project though really got me playing around with gouache -- although it is an expensive paint to experiment with hahaha.

I hope you like them!!
will have a few updates coming a long. Lots of work!!

Cloud Studies

Clouds Clouds Clouds
That is painting class for you.
The thumbnails were a lot of fun to do! Experimentation with colour and technique is always great!
Doing a large cloud study is hard hahaha (8 x 12)

Anyways it was fun for the most part!
Enjoy!!

3 Variation Paintings & Form Rendering!

Hey Guys!
It has been a while since I have updated with some painting!
I forgot to upload my first project in painting class which was to render 8 different shapes with a light source in gouache. This is a teacher who love to give out Cs and I got a B so I guess I am alright with that mark. I screwed up the reflective light but otherwise I am okay with how they turned out!

Form Rendering 1
Form Rendering 2

Our second project was a LOT more interesting!!
We got to paint backgrounds!!
YES!
In this project we had to do a variety of Thumbnails for ideas, as well as tonal plans for the paintings!
The first of the three paintings was to do a flat tonal study (using black and white gouache),
simply breaking down the values of the layers!
The second painting was to add gradation (also using black and white gouache) and to get more detailed about the forms.
Thirdly we also used gradation and were able to add a third colour to the black and white gouache!

Gradient Variation using Black and White Gouache
Gradient Variation using Black and White plus 1 Colour

Anyways! I hope you guys enjoyed the paintings!
I will be back soon with more good stuff to see!

Sketchbook Stuff!

So I started Animation at Sheridan yesterday! It is all intros and such this week but I get to go to Life Drawing tomorrow morning and I can't wait!! I will have a longer post about this week at the end of the week!

Anyways I kept saying I'd upload some sketchbook stuff so here is the start of my newest one, enjoy!

Poor lonely monster..

A princess and a thoughtful naked girl

Playing around with simple shapes and studying
 some samurai jack background techniques!

Weird creature and it's rider, not exactly sure what it is hahah

That is one sassy man on the left ;) And some background doodles

This is from our first character design class!
We had a few minutes to sketch an influential character/show/movie etc.
from when we were younger... can you tell what it is ;)

And we had to also draw the person next to us as
a sort of character :) It was supposed to get us
to meet new people but I was next to my friend Alanna!
Thanks guys! I will be back soon with some life drawing and more stuff from my amazing program!

Artwork for Huron Public School

So my mum has a tendency to volunteer me for things like class trips and art projects within the school she teaches at.
Which is totally cool with me, I always have great experiences!

HURON STREET PUBLIC SCHOOL SIGN
So one of the two projects I did for this school is a big sign that will stand out front of their school.
I was told to include art, sports, technology, music, trees, their school name, address and phone number as well as their slogan.

My original design had the slogan underneath the school's name in the tree, and where the slogan currently is would have been a hawk (their school mascot) But unfortunately the board they gave me was much more narrow than I expected, so I had to make some adjustments.

Anyways, it came out okay, a nice simple design to capture the school's vibe. I got $400 dollars for this so I am not complaining ;)

MURAL
So the other project I was volunteered for was to help my mum paint a giant mural on the outside of their school. It is a project she put together in which all of the grade 4, 5 and 6 students got to paint a leaf on a piece of wood, which would then be placed on a large tree. This representing the diverse community within the school "we are all leaves of the same tree" sort of idea.

I was a little skeptical at first, I wasn't sure how well the student's leaves would tie into the overall design, but I think it came out great!!

The tree my mum and I painted, We started by roughing out the design, then she went on to add the branches while I did the tribal pattern all over the bark!!
All of the kid's leaves attached!!!!

I hope you guys enjoyed these projects! I will update soon with a sketchdump!! :)

Oh Canada

Canada themed project for 2D design!
This piece features many different kinds of trees - the diversity of our environment is similar to the many cultures seen here in Canada! Hope you like it!

Self Portraits

So I may or may not have snuck into a presentation only for animation students this week...
John Musker was at Sheridan this Thursday. He is the director and done some animation for many Disney Classics including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules etc. It was a very cool presentation, I enjoyed it the best that I could squished on the ground between two desks (the ones with the chairs attached). He showed a lot of photos of his classmates at Cal arts (including people like John Lassiter, Henry Selick, Tim Burton,  Brad Bird and (the storyboard teacher at Sheridan) Nancy Beiman. I enjoyed watching his journey, and it helped when he explained the struggle and rejection he experienced trying to get into school and to work for Disney.
I am very glad I could watch the presentation.

Self Portraits

So our BIG painting project over reading week was two acrylic self portraits.
We could choose two of three options :
1. Cultural Identity
2. Roleplay
3. The Story of my Face

---
Super lame. One thing I learned or I suppose really realized was that I don't really have a cultural identity.
I don't have a religion or a stark culture.. I am German, British and Canadian but I don't really celebrate those things.
I think I really need to learn more about my Heritage.

So I chose The Story of my Face, and Roleplay... Roleplay is silly. I don't understand why this was even an option -- it took a very long time trying to think of an idea for that one.

Here they are:
(keep in mind I am not the best with acrylic paint hahaha *spare meeee*)

"The Story of my Face"
For this piece I focused on an expression that would play into my
anxiety issues. I hoped to achieve some sadness in the eyes.
Roleplay
Well... we watched Lord of the rings extended right as the break started,
I started reading them again and my work started showing the Hobbit.

Inevitable.
I am really not happy with the hand. It is really rushed (2am at this point)
and I had already restarted the whole thing after 8 hours of painting...

Hope you guys enjoyed the paintings,
I apologize for not updating more often, I have been pretty brain dead waiting for portfolio results.
I will post some Life Drawing and some sketchbook stuff soon!

Sheridan Animation Portfolio 2013

UPDATE: March 25th 2013 Accepted into Sheridan Animation Program!!
I hope that this portfolio will inspire and help anyone trying to get into Animation at Sheridan College.
It took me three years to get in, so no matter what if this is your dream keep fighting for it!
Best of luck to anyone applying, and I hope you enjoy!

~

As many of you may know this is my third year trying to get into the "Bachelor of Fine Arts : Animation" program at Sheridan College. It is a world renowned program and it has been my dream since I was in grade 2... seriously.

Last year I was very close to getting into the program, but after appealing and such it just didn't happen. Anyways, it is due Monday February 25th.  I am happy with how it turned out this year and I hope you all enjoy it!

The lighting is different in each picture because I took some in the morning (which had lovely natural light) then re-took them just now (for lots were blurry).
