Mythical Self Portrait

I began this project completely ignoring the self portrait aspect. It is the end of the term, I am tired of travelling more than four hours a day to and from school, but above all I am just anxious to start next year.

My first attempt at this project was a combination of an axelotl and a dragonfly. I made the armature, bulked it up and began sculpting it in class. By the time our second class rolled around, I was already done. That day I was feeling sick after an exam, and went home, I knew I was in a bad mindset and would only waste time in that class. I baked it that night and everything went smoothly. Until the painting aspect. I base coated and tried many colour schemes, but nothing was working for me. I became frustrated and ended up dropping the sculpture, breaking part of it.

As I thought about the project, I realized I had been missing the self portrait aspect all along, and I knew that I needed to start again – a completely fresh start. What I came up with is sort of a yeti with the hands, feet and face of a human girl, with antlers. The human aspect is me, or how I feel in my mind. The emotion displayed seems sad, possibly lonely, but the mystical quality of the eyes (glass beads) seem to be seeking something. The antlers represent my roots (as they are made from sticks). They are seemingly growing out of her head, branching out and craving knowledge. There is a larger glass bead in the centre of the creature. This is my heart, displayed outside of the fur protection – vulnerable. The overall pose evokes hesitation, yet the candle held in front, cradled by the lantern, lights the way forward – hope to be happier and to escape the darkness. The fur that engulfs the being is protection, warm and soft.

The overall figure is an armature, covered in tinfoil and super sculpey. The eyes and chest piece are glass beads inset into the clay. The antlers are twigs, which I also inserted into the sculpey while baking (I covered them in tinfoil so they would not catch fire). The fur is from an old stuffed bear. Before brutally murdering it, my brother decided to name it Todd – just to make me feel bad... it worked.. R.I.P. Todd. The candle is a real candle, that I cut down to the small size.

Overall, I love how this came out. I feel it will be different from other projects, and hopefully stand out (both qualities I like to achieve everyday). I love the gesture of the creature, and the expression that shows through. Even though it was stressful, I am glad I started over. I think it is a good end to my projects this year in 3D which all in all I am pretty proud of.

For my first time in a 3D art class, I think it was very successful, and I plan to continue using these techniques within my future career of animation.

I hope you enjoyed it :) My last fundies project I will upload WOOO!!!

Scott Dancing

The "I just don't care" dance
choreography by Scott Pearson
~
Today at work, it was claimed that I have a really dorky dance when upbeat  songs come on...
which is true...
But then Scott started dancing.
I love my job!!

This resulted in a very choppy animation made at night time during one of the most painful headaches of my life.
Goodnight!!

2D & 3D design

Hey guys! I haven't been very diligent for posting every project this year so far, I want to show you things once they are completed and all of the steps, so it often takes longer to post these projects!!

2D design - Architectural Shape Line and Texture project!

For this project, we had to look at architectural forms and simplify them into shape, line and texture using black and negative space! First we had to do ten thumbnails of potential projects!

Thumbnails

Next, our teacher picked three thumbnails he wanted to see as roughs!

Rough #1
Rough #2
Rough #3

After checking with our teacher one final time, we created a linear transfer to use on our final piece!
The pencil transferred onto the illustration board we were using for our final piece.

Linear transfer

And lastly we repainted/inked the final piece, using a sheet of black mayfair paper to frame the final copy.

Final
Need a better camera for sure -- but I hope you enjoyed that project!!

3D design - In class project

I was so excited for this next project!
GIANT. CARDBOARD. SHOES.
And I went crazy --- brought in my roller-skates!!

I am actually so amazed we had it done in time!!
3 hours of hard work payed off, and our GIANT roller skate was completed!!! WOOOOO!!
I was so lucky to be in a group with Alex and Miyuki, both very talented and hard working girls!!

ENJOY THE BEAUTY!!!

Thanks for reading!!

3D design: Organic, Plane & Abstract Studies

3D design
Organic - Plane - Abstract
Studies
~
In 3D design we have been studying organic shapes! To do this we were asked to bring 3 vegetables or fruit to class. We had one class to get as much of the form built as possible and then another class to continue working the form, put together the composition and then add details!

I went to the Grocery Store in search of the WEIRDEST looking veggies, and found them. A purple sweet potato, a weird root, and some sort of squash that vaguely resembles a breast!

The composition of vegetables

The first form was an organic representation of the vegetables.
We had to get as much of the form and detail we could in the one class, so I think I did well for 3 hours!

The second transformation was a plane study of the vegetable composition.
We had to cut very geometrical forms to represent the shape and form of the forms.

You can tell I went a little crazy with the last transformation. We were told abstract in this sense was do whatever we want as long as it still sort of represents your original fruits.
So a little girl and her best friend the Yeti moved in!!

I'll upload all of the sketches for this when I get them back!

Thats all for now!
